About the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation
Sentinels of Freedom is a unique service provider
supporting severely wounded/disabled veterans for four years following their medical discharge from the Armed Forces.
Sentinels of Freedom started as a local organization in San Ramon, California in 2003 and expanded the program nationally in 2007. Since inception, Sentinels of Freedom has accepted over 90 men and women into the program (graduated and currently in our program). These severely wounded veterans come from all branches of service (Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines and Coast Guard). We believe that for the severely wounded, it takes a sustained period of support in multiple forms to provide the greatest opportunity for long-term success. While we make this support available for up to four years we have learned that in some cases the successful transition occurs more rapidly and some severely wounded veterans graduate earlier.
The Sentinels of Freedom program includes the following objectives:
1. Surrounding the veteran with a community
A team of 6 - 10 volunteers made up of business professionals and civic-minded community members who mentor, guide and provide advice (examples: case worker and physician to
ensure proper health care; legal assistance with setting up will; financial adviser to assist with setting up budget and understanding sound financial principals).
2. Finding and placing the veteran in a career-oriented job
We help veterans find full or part-time positions which provide training and the opportunity for upward mobility. We work directly with employers and the veteran to match skill set and goals.
3. Providing financial assistance for rent and furnishings
Sentinels will source and secure a place to live, provide a vehicle (modified to suit the needs of an injury as required), and other incidentals. In most cases the monies are sent directly to the service provider.
4. Ensuring continuing education,
On-line or classroom based education is required of all veterans in our program based
on our belief that education is essential to their long-term success.
